Welcome Parents!
KidPage is undergoing a massive redesign with lots of input from my daughter Maggie. The focus of KidPage will be learning in a safe environment. KidPage number one priority is to be the safest Kid's site on the web. Kid's will never be allowed to interact directly with one another. However, we do intend to allow kids to work on projects together and add to the site. Changes coming soon will allow for more and more of Kid generated content.
Since safety is our number 1 priority, everything will be moderated (meaning all content submissions will be reviewed by KidPage staff prior to allowing it to be viewed by others).
I want to be very up front on how KidPage will support itself. Most Kids sites have many many advertisements. This is how most web sites support themselves as the web has slowly taken on the same model as television (free content that you pay for by allowing advertisers to sell things to you). KidPage will also allow advertising but will allow parents to opt out of advertising.
Let me explain.
There will be three levels of access to KidPage. The first level is anonymous. No log in is required and most of the sites content will be available to anonymous users. However, advertising will be posted to help support the site. Anonymous users will not be able to post content to the site.
The second level is authenticated access. This is free and requires a parents email address. Users with authenticated access will be able to add most things to the site (although sensitive areas will be disallowed for security reasons).
The highest level of access is provided to Kids who's parents buy a yearly membership. Membership will cost just $10.00 / year and payment will happen via paypal (http://www.paypal.com). This is important as by paying with paypal you will establish your identity with KidPage. In order to have a paypal account, it must be linked to a checking account or credit card. By linking your identity to a financial instrument, Kidpage will know that you are who you say you are. This is important for Kids safety.
Having membership will turn off all advertising and will allow access to all areas of the site. More content and activities specific to membership will be coming.
If you have any questions, please post in the Ask Maggie section and I will respond directly to you.
Thanks. Please feel free to offer suggestions. I think together we can build a great place for Kids to learn on the web.
